Buying a pre-owned boat? Get a Survey!

Published April 5th, 2016 by Bernardo

I have one simple rule of thumb in buying any pre-owned vessel. Pay for a boat survey. Unless you’re towing home a scowl bought for the purpose of a complete refit, hire a qualified marine surveyor and have your prospective vessel thoroughly checked out.

A good marine survey is worth its weight in gold. The information it provides will either give you the peace-of-mind to buy with confidence, or a road map for repairs needed to make the vessel whole. Either way, it’s the only true metric to base your buying decision. Even the best captains and experienced boat owners can’t provide the deep analysis that comes from an experienced surveyor.

Ideally you want someone who is a member of the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors, or SAMS. SAMS® is intended to be an organization of Professional Marine Surveyors who have come together to promote the good image and general well-being of their chosen profession. Accredited Marine Surveyor® members are surveyors who have accumulated time in the profession, and have proven the technical skills necessary for designation as AMS®.

Accredited Marine Surveyors® are expected to follow a course of continuing education to maintain their accreditation. Members are guided by a code of ethics and are encouraged to participate in other organizations relative to the marine field.
