When McLaren Cars and Boeing Aircraft Corporation decided to use carbon fiber in some of their newest designs, there was a reason. Carbon fiber helps to create a lighter, stronger and stiffer body, yet easily molded to any shape. So it's only natural that this technology will eventually make its way into the boat building world. Sometime in 2016, Buddy Davis will be introducing their new 42 foot center which will be the first boat of its kind in the world to be made 100% of carbon fiber. Here's your textbook lesson on carbon fiber:
1. Carbon Fiber has excellent fatigue life and is extremely strong and rigid.
2. Carbon Fiber will deliver substantial weight reduction, about 1/3 less than fiberglass.
3. Carbon Fiber results in a 25% lighter hull structure that is 10-15% stiffer than fiberglass.
4. Carbon Fiber offers the ability to mold complex shapes and is easy to repair.
5. Carbon Fiber provides a very low coefficient of expansion.

The benefits of a carbon fiber boat are just being realized as more and more builders come to market. Light hull, deck and structures allow for more weight in the keel which results in a more stable vessel. They are easier to handle because of reduced loads and safer in the event of a collision. They are environmentally friendly, get better fuel economy and increased range.

Due to its high price, carbon fiber is not making its way into the mass market for most product applications. But like most new technology, that will change as time goes by and you'll see more and more carbon fibers use in the construction of cars, bikes, planes, and boats.
