The concept for Lehr Outboards was born while converting gasoline engines to run on propane in the North Sea, on the research vessel Sea Surveyor. CEO and Founder, Captain Bernardo Herzer says, “Propane is just safer, more efficient and more reliable, that’s why we used it on our ships.” Propane has been recognized as a “green” gas and is approved as an alternate fuel by both the Clean Air Act and National Energy Policy Act. Lehr outboards range from 2.5 to 25 HP and can run on a 16.4 oz. camping bottle up to a 7.5-gallon propane tank. A study of fuel consumption resulted in an astonishing 11.4 hour run time based on 3000 RPMs with a 31-lb. tank. Propane engines can be up to five times more efficient and typically cost about half the price to fuel when compared to gasoline. Lehr engines are easy to mount, require no choke and no priming, making these outboards ideal for inflatable ribs, tenders and smaller boats. All Lehr engines come with a 3-year warranty along with a 3 Star Ultra-Low California Air Resources Board (CARB) rating.
