Peanut Island Named Among Top 12 Snorkel Spots In America

Published March 1st, 2016 by Bernardo

According to Yahoo! Travel, who named the 12 best snorkel spots in the United States, and Peanut Island in Riviera Beach made the list.

The island got its name because of historic plans to use it as a terminal for shipping peanut oil—but it never happened.

Situated along the Intracoastal Waterway, the 80-acre tropical park is known for its clear waters surrounding the island- perfect for snorkeling.

Melinda Crow, travel writer for Yahoo!, wrote about Peanut Island's beauty in her Yahoo! article: "The list of ocean-going sea life that you might see here is a long one, and includes squid, rays, octopus, and brilliantly colored tropical fish. The best time for snorkeling is around high tide. The waters here are a comfortable 85-degrees well into September."

It's common knowledge that Florida's snorkeling scene is some of the best in the world. So it makes sense that five of 12 spots on the list are right here in our state.

The other four snorkeling sites were: John Pennecamp Park in Key Largo, the Sombrero Reef Marine Sanctuary in Marathon, Dry Tortugas National Park in Key West, and Crystal River- known for its manatees and clear springs.
